IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alfred John
Tillman
January 15, 1933 – October 15, 2024
Alfred John Tillman died in Vero Beach, Florida on October 15, 2024 at the age of 91. Al was born on January 15, 1933 in Suffern, New York to Edward S. and Hazel (McKechnie) Tillman. He often reminised about growing up on a 19-acre farm on Montebello Road in Suffern. The only tough time was when he caught rheumatic fever in ninth grade and ended up bedridden for 5 months. Al graduated from Suffern High School in 1950 and studied at Cornell University where he joined the Triangle Fraternity and earned his bachellors degree in Mechanical Engineering. Later he received his masters at Stevens Institute of Technology.
In 1959 Al broke his leg skiing at Stowe, Vermont. While still on crutches friends urged him to attend the Short Hills Ski Club. He caught the eye of the love of his life, Miriam Hedden, and they were married the following year.
Al worked as a mechanical engineer his entire career. He worked for Kodak in Rochester NY, Reaction Motors in Denville NJ, Marotta Scientific Controls in Boonton NJ, Combustion Engineering in Windsor CT, and Carlton Technologies (a subsidiary of Moog) in Elma NY and Tampa FL. He designed valves for aerospace and maritime projects.
Al and Miriam lived in Mt Tabor NJ, North Granby CT, Orchard Park NY, and Temple Terrace FL always making the best of where they lived. They also built a vacation home at Beebe Pond VT and went on many daytrips hiking, skiing and visiting attractions around northern New England and upstate New York. When they retired they lived full-time in an RV, touring the US and spending time with their children in Massachusetts, Virginia and Florida. They then settled in Vero Beach FL where they both lived for the rest of their days.
Al enjoyed skiing, tennis, hiking, boating, traveling, birding, playing bridge, reading, and being with family. When he retired he digitized and edited thousands of images and is known for his unique photoshopped greeting cards. He will be remembered for always making the best of every situation, enjoying life, exploring places, being humble, having a fun sense of humor, offering grace, and loving family.
Al was predeceased by his wife Miriam. He is survived by three children, four grandchildren, and a sister.
Services will be held in Virginia on November 16, 2024.
