Obituary

In Loving Memory of Andrea Betty Abernathy-Smith

Andrea Betty Abernathy-Smith, 66, of Vero Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully after a long illness on June 14, 2026.

Andrea was born on July 2, 1959, at Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital in Jersey City, New Jersey, to Willie and Hattie Abernathy. She was the beloved third daughter in a close-knit family. Raised in Hoboken, New Jersey, Andrea grew up in a household built on hard work, faith, and entrepreneurship. Her parents owned a multi-family dwelling and luncheonette, making history as one of the first Black-owned multi-family properties in the area. On the ground floor of the building, her father established "Andrea's Luncheonette," proudly naming it after his daughter.

As a young child, Andrea became affectionately known as "Candy" because she could never seem to stay away from the candy jar. That nickname followed her throughout her life and reflected the sweetness that endeared her to family and friends.

Andrea later relocated to Florida, where she built a life centered on family, perseverance, and the entrepreneurial spirit she inherited from her parents. Above all, she found the love of her life, Darell Smith. The two were united in marriage on June 27, 1993, at Bibleway Church of God in Christ. Their loving union endured for 33 years and was marked by faith, devotion, and unwavering commitment.

Gifted with remarkable creativity, Andrea became an accomplished seamstress, crafter, and decorator. She found great joy in sewing and took special pride in creating beautiful clothing for her daughter, Trina, throughout her school years. Her talents blessed not only her family but also countless friends and loved ones who benefited from her generous spirit and artistic gifts.

Andrea was a faithful member of Welcome Church, where she worshipped and nurtured her relationship with God.

Andrea was known for her warmth, kindness, resilience, and loving heart. She cherished her family deeply and was happiest when surrounded by those she loved. Her legacy of faith, creativity, and unconditional love will continue to inspire all who knew her.

Andrea was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Hattie Abernathy; her beloved son, Sean Ragin and her sister, Whilamena Abernathy.
She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband, Darell Smith; her daughter, Trina Moon her treasured grandchildren, Kiylee Foster and Konnor Moon and her living siblings, Willie Abernathy Jr., Delores Abernathy, Willie John Abernathy, Vanessa Abernathy, and Lisa Abernathy; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will miss her dearly.

Though our hearts are heavy with sorrow, we rejoice in the beautiful life Andrea lived and the lasting impact she made on everyone blessed to know her.
