She received a scholarship to the University of Miami where she was elected Sweetheart of the Kappa Alpha fraternity. During this time she met and married her best friend, Larry McCollister. At various times the family lived in Florida, Arkansas, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Oklahoma. Barbara was devoted to her family and enjoyed serving as a Brownie Troop leader, Girl Scout leader, Sunday School Teacher, choir member, President of the Junior Women's Community Club of Narberth, PA and for 10 years read for Recording Volunteers of the Oklahoma Talking Book Network for visually impaired people.
When her husband retired in 1987, she resigned as Office Manager for CITGO Petroleum Corp. in Tulsa, OK and they moved to Vero Beach, FL. She soon became involved in local activities and served as President of women's fellowship at Christ by the Sea United Methodist Church, as a mentor at Rosewood Magnet School, member of the Fellowship Board and the Board of Deacons at the Community Church UCC. As a member of the American Association of University Women, she was on the board of the Vero Beach chapter for many years, most recently as Treasurer.
Barbara is survived by her two daughters, two grandsons (Nathan Alexander and Chad Mattison) and two granddaughters (Michelle Alexander and Chelsey Mattison) and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband (Lawrence P. McCollister), her parents and three sisters.
