Obituary

Benjamin David Johnson of Vero Beach, Fl. formerly of Reading, Pa. went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at the age of 89. He was the husband of the late Geraldine L. (White) Johnson, his high school sweetheart and wife of 66 years. He was born in Reading, Pennsylvania on February 7, 1935, to his parents Mabel Johnson and Victor Johnson. He was enlisted in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1956 and was stationed on Shaw Air Force Base in Sumpter, South Carolina. He served and competed as a Multiple Sports Athlete on special teams where he played football, baseball, basketball, and boxing. After returning home from the service he was employed at Central Door and Plywood Company for 10 years. Benjamin then returned to school to complete his education and graduated from Reading Standard Evening High School in 1969. He then began working at the Berks County Prison where he moved through the ranks over the course of 20 years and became the Deputy Warden. While working there he developed a plan to make it possible for every prisoner to have a Bible available in each cell, which is still implemented to this day.

Benjamin, also affectionately known as "Skip", was a member of Zion Baptist Church in Reading, Pa. where he served as a Deacon for several years. He was a part of an acappella men's worship group that traveled all around spreading the word of the Lord and the presence of the Holy Spirit. He later became a member of Spring Valley Church of God in Reading, Pa. After moving to Florida, he became a member of Rhema Apostolic International Deliverance Center in Vero Beach, Fl. under the leadership of Dr. Apostle Christina Moore in 2021.

He's survived by his two daughters, Vicki L. Johnson-Williams, widow of Curtis Williams, and Rhonda A. McGilberry married to Timothy McGilberry, his brother Victor "Frisky" Johnson, and stepsisters Sandy, and Donna Douglas (married to Freddie Douglas). He has a total of 11 grandchildren: Rochelle Robertson (married to Wayne Robertson), Catonia Johnson, Corey Johnson (married to Danielle Johnson), David Williams, Antoinette Johnson, Victor Johnson, Mariah Williams, Timothy McGilberry II (married to Maribel McGilberry), Titus McGilberry, Thomas McGilberry, and Tobias McGilberry along with 15 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife Geraldine Johnson, his parents Mabel and Victor Johnson and stepmother Elise Johnson, his brother Charles" Buddy" Johnson, and stepsister Barbara Ann.

Visitation will be held from 11am-12pm, Saturday, October 12, 2024 at Cox-Gifford Seawinds Funeral Home, 1950 20th Street, Vero Beach, FL 32960. Chapel services will begin at 12pm in the funeral home chapel.
