Betsy Wurl McKean died peacefully at home in Vero Beach on December 3, 2022. She was the beloved wife of Harlley "Mac" McKean, who died in 2020. Before moving to Vero Beach in 1999, Betsy and Harlley resided in Lexington, Kentucky, where Harlley was a professor at the University of Kentucky.
Betsy was born on January 15, 1933 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her father, Frederick Wurl, was a commercial artist. Her mother, Emily Sprague Wurl, was a schoolteacher. Betsy was pre-deceased by her only sibling, Marjorie Wurl Benedict.
Betsy, who held a Masters in Fine Arts, taught art in secondary schools then at the college level. Her paintings and photographs have been shown in numerous exhibitions throughout the country and are in museum and private collections. In 2008, her book of fine art photographs, "Pieces of Time", was published. She was a member of the Vero Beach Museum of Art and was active in the art community here for many years.
Betsy is survived by two children from her marriage with her former husband, Roger Arthur Bublitz. They are Lisa Wilcox (Reginald) of Vero Beach and Todd Bublitz (Kerry) of San Diego, California. Betsy is also survived by five stepchildren: Kerry McKean Bublitz, Jennifer Benjamin, Greg McKean, Michael McKean and John McKean; twelve grandchildren, Errol Wilcox, Victor Wilcox, Erica Rockwood, Melissa Miller, Justin Goodrich, Samantha McKean, Spencer McKean, Alia McKean, Kimberly McKean, Becky Almy, Austin Benjamin and Andrew Benjamin; and ten great-grandchildren, Winnie Wilcox, Madeline Rockwood, Owen Miller, Maggie Miller, Mei Chua, Jake Chua, Alex Almy, Jaspyr Almy, Chloi Almy, and Sam Almy.
Betsy and Mac were members of Community Church in Vero Beach. A private inurnment service will be held at its Memorial Garden.
