Betty S. Lloyd

Our beloved mother, Betty S. Lloyd, was born on the Fourth of July in Spokane, Washington, and died on the Fourth of July 2012 at the VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach, Florida. It was appropriate that she was an Independence Day baby as she was certainly independent throughout her years, living a full and adventurous life. For example, she was one of a limited number of people who can say that they had set foot on each of the seven continents.

Mom grew up in Seattle, WA, and Pittsburgh, PA, where she graduated from Dormont High School and Carnegie Mellon University. She moved with her first husband to various U.S. Navy posts throughout the United States during World War II, finally settling in Asheville, NC, where she began her life-long love of reading and cooking in earnest.

Mom moved to Vero 62 years ago and became the Executive Assistant for developer Fred Tuerk. It was there that she met the new engineer in town who was in charge of building the first Merrill P. Barber Bridge over the Indian River. On May 30, 1953, she and that engineer, Robert "Flip" Lloyd, were married and started a family which grew to eventually include their four children: Susan, Roberta, Bobby and John.

Mom always believed in giving back to the community and did so through numerous volunteer activities. She served as the clerk-in-charge of Voting Precinct 5A, which included the entire barrier island from county line to county line; as Directress of the Trinity Episcopal Church Altar Guild for three terms; as the two-time president of and also treasurer of the Garden Club's Hibiscus Circle; as treasurer of the Beta Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Psi; as vice-president and secretary of the local Kappa Kappa Gamma Alum Chapter; and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Garden Club and the Board of the Salvation Army. She was a Girl Scout and Cub Scout troop leader and the leader and founder of Brownie Scout Troop 181, which she established for young girls living on the barrier island. Mom also had her insurance sales license from the State of Pennsylvania and her real estate license from the State of Florida.

Mom was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Ruth Schoenberg, her husband, Robert "Flip" Lloyd, and her son, Robert Arthur Lloyd. She is survived by daughters, Susan E. Lloyd and her husband, Thomas L. Frields of Washington, DC; Judge Roberta A. Lloyd and her husband, Donald W. McWilliams of Houston, TX; her son, John Robert Lloyd and his wife, Lynda of Tallahassee, FL; and granddaughter Katheryn H. Lloyd of Brattleboro, VT.

Continuing Mom's belief in giving back to the community, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, the Houston, TX, SPCA, the Nature Conservancy, or the charitable organization of your choice.

Services: A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, July 9, 2012 at the Cox Gifford Seawinds Funeral Home and Crematory in Vero Beach, FL. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at Trinity Episcopal Church in the chapel building with Rev. Lewis R. Gwyn III officiating. A private family interment will be held at John's Island Cemetery.
