Obituary: Burtis Burt-W2JLO Eli Lawton
Burtis Burt-W2JLO Eli Lawton, 91, of Vero Beach, FL died Thursday, January 1, 2009 at his home.
He was born August 28, 1917 in New York City, NY and moved to Vero Beach in 1984 from Lavallette, NJ.
Prior to his retirement he had worked for Dumont Laboratories as an Electrical Engineer. During WW II, he worked on the mass spectrometer and then onto radar during his years in Chicago. Mr. Lawton was a member of the Vero Beach Amateur Radio Club where his call sign was W2JLO. He was a ham radio operator for over 75 years and provided emergency communications support to many local charity events. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Vero Beach Jazz Society.
Survivors include his daughter Barbara S. Lawton of Arlington, VA; two sons Richard H. Lawton of Martinsville, NJ and Robert E. Lawton of Bowie, MD; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Helen Smith Lawton and son Stephen C. Lawton.
Service: A memorial celebration will take place 10:00 AM, Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church in Vero Beach, with Dr. Charles Lever officiating, followed by a light reception.
