Col. Edward R. Cleary USA retired of Grove Isle, Vero Beach, FL died on Saturday, August 15, 2009 from natural causes.
He was born on August 21, 1919 in Bridgeport Connecticut. A resident of Vero Beach for the past 10 years, he moved here from Westchester Pa. and was raised in Valhalla, New York.
Col. Cleary was a 27 year veteran of the U.S. Army Infantry Division and was highly decorated. He graduated from Fordham University at the age of 19; graduated West Point in 1943; and received a Masters from Princeton University. He served in World War II in the Pacific, Korean and Vietnam Wars. He served on the Joint Chiefs of Staff under President Lyndon B. Johnson.
He is survived by his beloved wife Helen Cleary, daughter Mary Seton Stevenson of Alexandria, Virginia, his step children Craig Campbell, Judy Sarver and Scott Campbell and 8 grandchildren.
Services: Visitation for friends and family will be held at Cox-Gifford Funeral Home in Vero Beach on Tuesday, August 18th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. followed by a funeral mass at 2:00 p.m. at St. Helen's Catholic Church directly across from the funeral home.
