Obituary

David (Dave) MacDuffie Cochran died unexpectedly in his sleep on the Fourth of July of natural causes, a month before his 82nd birthday. He lived in Vero Beach, Florida.

Dave Cochran was born in Greenwich, CT on August 6, 1942. His family moved to Darien, CT where he attended Royle Elementary School, Middlesex Jr High School, then graduated from Darien High School in 1960. He attended Hamilton College, then graduated with a BA from Columbia University after serving 3 years in Army Intelligence in Berlin during the height of the Cold War. He received his MBA from New York University in 1971.

After his first job at BBD&O advertising agency, he joined Colgate Palmolive's General Management program and eventually relocated to Toronto, Canada with his wife, Daphne Montgelas. A few months later they brought their first child into the world, a son named David Jr. The family was then moved to Portugal where, a year later, they welcomed their second child, a daughter they named Michele. In 1977, after another relocation to Brazil while at Colgate, the family moved back to the US where Dave would eventually get recruited to The Seagram Company in New York City. After several years running much of that company's international operations, Dave was charged with running the international business of Mennen International in 1982. In 1992 he started his own company, Cochran & Co. Int'l to assist domestic and international corporations in their growth plans, both structurally and operationally.

Dave always felt a duty to give back to his community. When he and his family moved back to the US  in the late 1970's he began to get involved with the local youth lacrosse program in New Canaan, CT. Dave was ultimately elected President of the New Canaan Lacrosse Association (NCLA) where he would go on to start the "Bantam" division (for grades 3 through 5) as well as the town's first organized girls program. He also brought together a group of other youth lacrosse leaders in neighboring towns and formed CONNY (Connecticut and New York) which still operates today. When Dave finally stepped down from NCLA after three decades of leadership and service the Board of association named the youth tournament he started after, known today as the Cochran Classic. Dave relocated to Florida in the late 1990's and continued working with kids, tutoring disadvantaged children and mentoring in the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America program.

Dave is predeceased by his parents, Jim and Dorothy Cochran, and his older brother Jim Cochran. He is survived by his younger sister Margie Cochran-Kelly and her daughter Annie Malev. He is also survived by his brother Jim's wife, Robin Holt Cochran, their son Webb Cochran and daughter Bonnie Cochran. Additionally, Dave is survived by his first wife Daphne Montgelas Cochran to whom he was married for 26 years, his son David MacDuffie Cochran Jr and wife Kris Schaub Cochran and their two children David III and June of New Canaan, CT and Michele Cochran Downey and husband Dan Downey and their two children Hugh and Charlie, of Vero Beach, FL.

Dave was married to Maria Selima for 20 years until they divorced. He loved her two grown sons, Matt and Philip Carluzzo.
