Obituary

David A. Long, 76, passed away on November 23, 2025. He departed this life leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and cherished memories that will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.  He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and moved to Fort Pierce as a young child and later attended Dan McCarty High School.

He was a well-known and loved member of the Vero Beach community.  He sometimes had a gruff exterior but always a tender heart.  He had a dry sense of humor and has been described as a unique and funny man, the sweetest grumpy old man, a generous man with a big heart, and he loved being a little obnoxious just to see if you have a sense of humor.  He earned the nickname of Sunshine due to his bright smile.

David was a veteran, having served in the United States Army.  He then went on to work at Piper Aircraft in Vero and then Bob's Mobil in Ft. Pierce.  In the 1970's he worked on his brother-in-law's racing parts truck, spending Friday nights at the Palm Beach racetrack and Saturday nights at the Hialeah racetrack.  He would also work as a member of the pit crew for Jim Crowe. In the late 1970's he started his career as a locksmith and quickly made a lasting impression on his clients.  He took pride in his work and was respected by colleagues and friends alike. Outside of work, he enjoyed golfing, playing pool and softball, riding his motorcycles, watching stock car races and spending "happy hour" in his garage having comical conversations with his neighbors while they enjoyed a good drink or two.

David's life was enriched by the many nieces, nephews, and friends who loved him, and the memories made together will be treasured always. His memory will continue to guide and inspire us.

He is survived by his brother, John R. 'Jack' Long, along with many cherished nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents Dale and Helen Long and his siblings Billy Long, Bobby Long, Betty Benson, Janet Kimberlin, Carolyn Bailey, Rose Bailey and Nancy Bergenroth.

Family and friends are invited to join us to celebrate his life at Calvary Chapel, 941 18th Street, Vero Beach, FL on Thursday, December 4th.
