Obituary

Donald Alan Rhodes, 77, tragically passed away in a motorcycle accident on August 20, 2020.

Don was born on December 5, 1942 in Miami Beach, FL to the late Jack and Elizabeth Rhodes.

Don was a man of many talents.  He served in both the United States Army as well as the Air Force and was honorably discharged by both branches.  After his duty in the service, he attended the University of Colorado, as well as San Diego University and obtained his MBA.  Don and his family moved to California where he was employed by the Southern California Association of Governments.  In 2011, they retired making the Florida Keys their home. After 10 years they decided to make Vero Beach home

Don had an adventurous spirit and loved the outdoors.  He was an avid scuba diver and was a self-taught photographer that gained him an award for his Osprey photographs by the Audubon Society that he was a member of.  He shared his multitude of photographs with the world through social media.  Don volunteered with the ELC pontoon in Sebastian as a tour guide, and would take pictures of the birds as well as the fish and other water life.

Along with his parents, Don is preceded by his son Scott, who passed from malignant medullary thyroid cancer in 2017; and Carroll Burroughs, who had later adopted Don.

He is survived by his loving wife of 19 years, Maria Almaguer Rhodes, nephews, Mason, Sonny and Freddy; of whom he raised as his own children.  He is also survived by son, Sean (Carol),grandchildren, Shannon, Thomas and Rebecca, of whom he absolutely adored, two sisters Judy(Conant) Atwood and Jeanne and numerous relatives and an abundance of friends.

Don and his wonderful sense of humor and adventure for life, will be greatly missed by those that met and loved him.  His passing has created an emptiness within his family.  He will be lovingly remembered by those in the Harmony Reserve Community and all those who were blessed to be a part of his life.

Due to Covid 19, services will be held at a later date for family and friends.  Don's cremated remains will be scattered at Bahia Honda in the Keys and Hanalei Bay in Kauai.
