Doris Cecelia Black Groff, 81, of Vero Beach, passed away at Indian River Hospital on November 16, 2010.
She was born on October 30, 1929 to Crosby M. Black, Jr. and Nellie Habbersett Black, in Chester, PA.
Doris was raised in Swarthmore, PA, and graduated from Swarthmore High School in 1947. She attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, VA, and graduated from West Chester State College in PA with a degree in Education, and where her athletic ability earned her the distinction of being named to the All-American Lacrosse Team. Doris was employed as an elementary school teacher in Springfield, PA before retiring to marry and raise a family of three children in Swarthmore. After her children were grown, she moved to Vero Beach where she has resided for 30 years. Doris was a long-time member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, as well as of the Descendents of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence, being a direct descendent of Pennsylvania signer John Morton.
Mrs. Groff is survived by her husband Richard H. Groff of Clearwater, FL; sons Ric H. Groff (Linda) of Charlotte, NC and Gary M.B. Groff (Leigh) of Ludwigsburg, Germany; daughter Holly Groff Moore (Robert) of Fellsmere, FL; 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, and a nephew and niece. S
She was predeceased by her sister Marjorie Black Melton.
Services: Family and friends are invited to gather on Saturday, November 20, 2010 from 3-5p.m. at The Eagles Nest Restaurant at the Sebastian Memorial Golf Course for remembrances and a celebration of Doris life.
