Dorothy Marie Dykeman Wood- Loving Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother
Dorothy Dykeman Wood was born in Brooklyn, NY to Marie Sammons Dykeman and Conrad F. Dykeman on July 20, 1921 and passed awy peacefully after a lenghty illness on May 8, 2009. Dorothy attended Bradford College, in what is now Haverhill, MA. She met her future husband, Lewis Keith Wood, while vacationing in Honolulu, HI, where he was stationed at Pearl Harbor, prior to and during WWII. Mrs,. Wood and her family settled in Atlanta, Ga in 192 and she and her husband owned L. Keith Wood and Company, a manufacturers's representative, with Dorothy taking the reins as bookkeeper. She continued in that role until the death of her Husband in 1976. She and her husband, Keith, also enjoyed their second home in Vero Beach, FL, where Dorothy lived at the time of her death.
Dorothy and her family traveled extensively, visiting many countries. Once while visiting Tahiti on a business trip, she decided, with her no-nonsense approach, to continue their journey, and went on to Australia, South Africa and South America. She loved to take cruises with her entire family and even went on a Caribbean cruise this past Christmas with her son, Lewis Keith Wood, Jr. Even though her health was failing her, she enjoyed being able to travel once again. Dorothy's passions were vast and many. Whether it was a good crossword puzzle, a challenging game of bridge or an intriguing book, she enjoyed them to the fullest. Her biggest passion was making the most spectacular dollhouses and they all had the touch of a true artist. She enjoyed teaching others her art of creating the houses. Her great granddaughter, Isabelle, received a grand dollhouse for Christmas two years ago. Dorothy stayed up late into the night to make sure the furniture placement was "just right". Mrs. Wood was the ultimate hostess and threw many spectacular parties at their home on Lullwater Parkway in Atlanta. She and her husband were long term members of Druid Hills Golf Club in Atlanta and The Moorings Club in Vero Beach, Florida.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Keith Wood Sr, her parents, Marie and Conrad Dykeman, Grandson, Martin Keith Wood, daughter in law Sandra Wood and son in law, George Stevens. She leaves to cherish her memory, daughter Judy Stevens, Merritt Island, Florida, son Lewis Keith Wood Jr., Roswell, GA and daughter Kathleen Kurz ( Richard), Santiago,Chile. Grandchildren George Stevens (Leah), Keith Stevens and Marie Kurz. Two great grandchildren, Isabelle Stevens and Jackson Stevens.
The family will receive friends at the Roswell Funeral Home on Thursday, May 14th from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 15th at All Saint's Episcopal Church, 634 West Peachtree St., N.W, Atlanta, GA at 2:00 PM with a private interment at Floral Hills. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the charity of their choice.
