Dorothy Talbert's Obituary
Dorothy Talbert of Vero Beach, FL passed away Monday, April 14, 2008 at her home. She was born December 4, 1934 to F. Roland and Joanna Dewitt Allaben in Grand Rapids, MI. Dort was graduated by the University of Michigan in 1956 with a B.A. in Education and began her career in education teaching elementary school in Michigan 1956 to 1958. She moved to Vero Beach in 1958 where she taught physical education at Vero Beach High School.
As a dedicated public leader for twenty-two years, she was elected to serve on the Indian River County School Board in 1974 and continued her tenure until 1986. She took a hiatus and returned to serve again from 1992 through 2002.
Dort continued her career teaching as an Adjunct Computer Science Professor at Indian River Community College from 1984 to 1992, and on the QE II for Cunard Cruise Lines. In her retirement years Dort remained an active member of the Republican Women of Indian River County and Friends of the Library, for which she served as current president.
She is survived by her sons Samuel, and his wife Joana, of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and William of Ocala, FL, and daughters Heather Forbes of Orlando, FL, Angela Kohtala, and her husband Edwin., of Kansas City, MO and daughter-in-law Theresa Aaronson of Tallahassee, FL. She is also survived by her brothers Robert Allaben, MD, of Gaylord, Michigan, and Lawrence Allaben, DVM, of Sparta, MI. Additionally she leaves seven grandchildren, Arthur Talbert of Tallahassee, Samantha Talbert of Cabo San Lucas, Daisy Talbert of Wellington, FL and Einhaus, Germany, Benjamin Forbes and Joanna Forbes of Orlando, FL, and Camille Kohtala and Katherine Kohtala of Kansas City, MO. Dort was preceded in death by her eldest son, Peter.
The family will receive friends the Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home in Vero Beach from 4-7 PM on Sunday, April 20, 2008.
A memorial celebration will be held 10:30 AM, Monday, April 21, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church in Vero Beach, Dr. G. Timothy Womack officiating. Dort will be returned to her native Michigan for interment.
