Edward J. Michelson, 93, longtime Washington DC correspondent for Massachusetts newspapers died just short of his 94th birthday at a nursing facility in Vero Beach, Florida on March 23, 2009.
Mr. Michelson, a 1937 graduate of Williams College, was born in Northampton, Mass, and as an Army private served in the Office of Strategic Services during World War II, before working for CBS radio in New York.
Mr. Michelson and his wife Dorothea retired to Vero Beach, Florida. From 1947 to 1993, Mr. Michelson was a correspondent and later the Washington, DC editor of Forbes Magazine, as well as a contributor to a number of trade publications. In Washington, he was a member of the White House Press Corp, the National Press Club and the Cosmos Club and covered the Massachusetts congressional delegation for, among other publications, the Boston Herald Traveler and Berkshire Eagle, his home town newspaper, in Pittsfield Mass.
Until his death, Mr. Michelson was an avid reader with a phenomenal memory of history. He had an enlightened perspective of current events and Washington political history. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Dorothea in 2003, and survived by his three children, Kathleen Connolly of Vero Beach, FL, Paul Michelson of Seattle, WA, and Emily Crews of Washington, DC, his five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. At his request there will be no funeral services.
