Frank A. Freire was born October 10, 1927 in Bayonne, NJ. His father Joseph from Sada, Spain and mother Rose whose family was from Naples, Italy. He had two sisters, Beatrice & Rosemarie. Frank grew up in Brooklyn, NY. His father was a Longshoreman in New York Harbor and moved to Miami, FL in the 90's. He lived to 102 ½ years old!
Frank served in the Army as an MP Sgt. during WWII for approximately 3 years. He entered from West Palm Beach, FL and discharged 6/18/1946. He was a Ship Fitter in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. In 1967 when the Brooklyn Navy Yard closed he relocated his family to South Jersey. He worked for the Department of Defense at the Philadelphia Naval Supply Depot, as an Engineer Technician until he retired at age 56 in 1984.
Frank resided in Willingboro, NJ before retiring to Spanish Lakes Country Club, in Ft. Pierce, FL 27 years ago. He remarried Genie March 27, 1987-24 years ago. Genie has lived in Atlantic Care Nursing Home since 2007.
Frank enjoyed playing tennis, softball team, bowling league, little league umpire and coach. He was very active and fit. Until recently in 2010 daily he still rode a bike, swam or walked laps in the pool. He was very active helping set up for clubhouse activities in Spanish Lakes Country Club.
He was an active member of St. Helen Catholic Church, in Vero Beach, FL. For many years, Frank handmade Rosary Beads for missions to sell for funding at St. Helen Catholic Church. He also sponsored several Priest to go to Monastery and many missions. Frank enjoyed playing bingo and bunco. He also enjoyed being around other people, being outside and listening to Frank Sinatra.
Sadly, Frank was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrigs Disease) and Progressive Palsy, which he battled for almost 2 years. On Tuesday, March 1, 2011, Frank A. Freire, 83, of Vero Beach, FL died at VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach.
Survivors include his wife of 24 years Gene, his two daughters; Barbara the youngest daughter and Diane the oldest daughter and two grandsons; Michael and David from the oldest daughter.
Services: A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 AM, Saturday, March 5, 2011 at St. Helen Catholic Church in Vero Beach.
