Frederick A. Brofos' Obituary
Frederick A. Brofos, 80, of Vero Beach, FL died Friday, November 28, 2008 at the Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach.
Mr. Brofos was born December 7, 1927 in London, England and moved to Vero Beach 15 years ago from Warner, NH.
He was a student at the Wallops School in Weybridge and of Kings Mead in Seaford, he moved with his family to Norway in 1940 where he attended the Grimerud School where he and a group of friends stared to collect stamps avidly. A master of many languages, he worked for the Allied Psychological Warfare Group as a translator. In 1946 he attended Washington University in St. Louis, MO graduating with a degree in Fine Arts. During the Korean War, he served in the US Army at Governors Island, and afterwards took a position working at the National Archives and ITT as an archivist. In 1961, he moved to Warner, NH where he focused on philatelic writing and published hundreds of articles and books on Scandinavian and American Postal History. For this work, he was elected to be an Honorary Life Member of the Scandinavian Collectors Club; The National Philatelic Society, London; and of the Friends of the Norwegian Railroad Museum. He was Editor for 10 years of The Posthorn, the bimonthly journal of the Scandinavian Collectors Club. He was invite to be a signatory to the Roll of Fame of the Cinderalla Club of Great Britain and was awarded the Gold Medal of the Norwegian Postal Museum. He was elected to the Writers Hall of Fame of the American Philatelic Society and received the Order of the Silver Lion from the Norwegian Philatelic Federation and the prestigious Anderssen-Dethloff gold medal.
Survivors include hie wife of 25 years Rosemary Brofos of Vero Beach; son Alexander Brofos of Hoptkinton, NH; step-sons Scott Ossenfort of Vero Beach, FL and Kevin Ossenfort of Middleburg, FL; daughter Alecia Blazei of San Carlos, CA; sister Fleur Assmuesun of Fredensborg, Denmark; and two grandsons.
