Obituary

Gail Martin Griesemer, 68, peacefully passed on to Heaven on May 5, 2023.  Gail was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 15, 1954, the daughter of Walter A. Griesemer and Virginia Lorraine Martin Griesemer of Wyomissing, Pennsylvania.   She was born with the severe physical handicap of spina bifida, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down.   In her early years she had to have multiple surgeries and long hospitalizations.  Through hard work and extensive therapy she was able to overcome much of her physical challenges.  She attended public school, graduating from Wilson High School in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania in 1973, and went on to earn a BA in Education from Albright College in Reading, Pennsylvania and then a Masters of Education in Counseling from Kutztown State University.

Gail was an elementary school guidance counselor in the Reading Pennsylvania School System for almost a quarter of a century.  She never let her physical challenges stand in her way.  She was able to stand and walk with the aid of crutches, drive a car, and was an active member of several charities and public service organizations in the central Pennsylvania area, serving on the Board of Easter Seals Society of Eastern Pennsylvania.  She was personally recognized for her services by President Jimmy Carter.

In 2003 Gail retired to Vero Beach, Florida, where she continued to serve as a reading coach, library assistant and tutor to students at Vero Beach Elementary School and also worked with the local children's home.  She was very proud of her unofficial title of "Aunt Gail" earned from many of the children she worked with.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Vero Beach.

Gail is survived by sister Fay Lorraine Griesemer Walters and her husband, Lawrence Walters of Melbourne, Florida, and sister Dawn Griesemer Wagner and her husband Joseph Wagner, of North Wildwood, New Jersey, nieces:  Dr. Kristina Dawn Walters Gower, of Springfield, Pennsylvania, Dr. Meghan Gail Walters Branham, of Sumter, South Carolina, Sarah Joraine Wagner, and Martha Gail Wagner, of Glenside, Pennsylvania and nephew, Edward Walter Wagner, also of Glenside, Pennsylvania.

There will be a service for Gail at the Cox-Gifford Funeral Home in Vero Beach, Florida on Friday, May 26, 2023 at 4 p.m.  Additionally, a graveside service will be at the Oxford Cemetery, in Oxford, Pennsylvania at a yet to be determined date, where Gail will be interned next to her parents and grandparents.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in Gail's name to Easter Seals of Eastern Pennsylvania, 1501 Lehigh Street, Suite 201, Allentown, PA 18103, will be appreciated.
