Obituary

Gail Johnson, born in Wisconsin Rapids, WI—and forever a fan of warm weather—finally achieved her lifelong dream: moving to Florida and avoiding winter. These were goals she pursued with determination and that signature Midwestern grit. Her final wish was honored, and she passed peacefully at home.

A proud graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, GaiE went on to earn her master's degree and devoted 35 years to shaping young minds at Cedarburg High School—a career that sharpened her legendary glare and deepened her infinite well of patience.

After retiring, she traded chalkboards for campfires, exploring the country with little more than a tent, a paper map, and a firm belief that detours were just adventures with worse signage. She gardened with joy, read like a scholar on deadline, and cooked with passion. She was a master of the sewing machine and the perfectly timed sarcastic comeback—both deployed with precision.

Gail's quick wit, fierce independence, and expert-level eye rolls live on through her beloved daughters, Kate Bennett and Danielle (Bennett) Velis. Danielle, who now carries both her mother's sass and her husband's surname, ensured that Gail's signature eyebrow raise didn't skip a generation—her son, Bear, ah-eady delivers it flawlessly and shares his grandmother's firm refusal to eat bad food.

She leaves behind her brother, Alan Johnson, and his wife, Mary Jo, of Appleton; her sister, Lois Johnson, and her husband, Rob Wells, of Wausau; her cherished sister-in-law, Barbara Johnson; her cousin, Anite "Nina" Borski; and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind dear friends Heather Porterfield Pape and Mary Jo Econom, an impressive collection of houseplants (fates uncertain), and, of course, her one-of-a-kind recipe book—scribbled in the margins and seasoned with attitude.

In accordance with her wishes, no funeral or formal service will be held.
