George Feagin Hamner, 88, died at his home on Thursday, September 27, 2012. He was born June 16,1924, in Seale, Alabama and moved to Vero Beach from Jacksonville, Florida in 1966.

He was a Mechanical Engineering graduate of Auburn University and a member of Blue Key Honor Society.

A member of "The Greatest Generation," he was a decorated World War II US Army veteran, serving over 2 1/2 years in an amphibious assault unit in the Pacific from New Guinea, the Netherlands East Indies, the Philippines to Japan with the first occupying forces.

"Big", as he was affectionately known to his family and closest friends, was a unique
individual, who will be remembered for his love for his family, his special home-spun sense of humor, and his compassion for his fellow man.

Mr. Hamner was Chairman of Indian River Exchange Packers, President and Chairman of the Indian River Citrus League, a Director of Seald Sweet Growers and received the John T. Leslie Award of Excellence and Leadership presented by the Florida Citrus Packers.

He was a director of the Beach Bank of Vero Beach (now Northern Trust), a member and President of the Vero Beach Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. He also served as a Director of the AIDS Research and Treatment Center, Chairman of the Board of AlcoHope of the Treasure Coast and Chairman and founding member of Hanley Hall Treatment Center.

He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and served on its Vestry. He was a member of Quail Valley River Club, Vero Beach Country Club and the Riomar Golf Club.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years Ann Graves Hamner, his son George Hamner Jr. and wife Toni of Vero Beach, a daughter Nancy Hamner Gordon and her husband Bill Gordon of Charlottesville, Virginia, six grandchildren Virginia Camp Hamner and husband Bret Bostock, George Hamner, III (Chip) and wife Meredith, Katherine Cooper and husband Jonathan, Ann Gordon, Will Gordon and wife Lauren, and Rob Gordon, and three great-grandchildren Henry Bostock, Toby Bostock and Landon Gordon Tate, and his brother Nicholas Hamner of Kalamazoo, Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Gustavus Orum Hamner.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am, Saturday, October 6 at Trinity Episcopal Church with a reception following in the Great Hall.
