Henry Ostendorf's Obituary
Henry Ostendorf, 82, of Vero Beach passed away Thursday, April 23, 2009 at the VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach.
Mr. Ostendorf was born on September 11, 1926, at Hillside, NJ at the Elizabeth General Hospital.
He attended Whippany High School, and got a GED. He volunteered for the Navy in 1943 and enlisted in Underwater Demolition Teams. He served with the U.D.T. until the end of World War II, September 1946. In 1946 we put ashore in Sendai Japan seven Army Divisions. Then we went to the West Coast and put ashore three Marine Divisions. The war was over for us.
In 1946 he joined the U.S. Army for the service in Japan with the 11th Air Borne, out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He served in Korea from 1948 to 1951. Did two jumps behind the lines, he served with four Battle Stars, two Arrow Heads, and one Presidential Unit Citation and one South Korean Presidential Citation.
He returned to the USA, Fort Benning, Georgia, for military Commission. He proceeded to three months training. He left the school because of physical difficulties.
He left the school and was employed by Bishop Electric, Cedar Grove, NJ for 29 years as Plant Engineer. He left Bishop Electric after 30 years, when they were acquired by Plymouth Rubber Massachusetts. He then worked for various companies as Plant Engineer until retirement in 1990.
He was a life member of the U.D.T. Seal Museum in Fort Pierce, FL, and a life member of the VFW in Whippany, NJ.
Survived by his wife Audrey Bradley, daughters Katherine Hines of Minneapolis, MN, and Donna Cudia of Ledgewood, NJ. One living brother Alvin Ostendorf of New Jersey.
Grandsons Eric and Michael Hines, Christopher, Derrick and Joseph Cudia
He was preceded in death by his mother Elizabeth Ostendorf, his father Henry Ostendorf, two brothers William and Frederick Ostendorf. Two sisters Margaret Kurtz and Dorothy Tinnus.
Services: A Sunday Sunrise Service will be held in November at the U.D.T. Seal Museum in Fort Pierce.
