IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Herbert Vreeland
Whittall
December 20, 1936 – July 8, 2024
Herbert (Herb) Vreeland Whittall was born in Summit, New Jersey on December 20, 1936 to Elizabeth Tompkins Whittall and Guy Herbert Whittall. Herb died peacefully after a long and valiant battle with prostate cancer on Monday, July 8, 2024, in Vero Beach, FL. He was 87 years old.
Growing up, Herb lived in Egypt, the Bahamas and Bermuda, before attending and graduating from Phillips Andover Academy. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University and his Masters in Mechanical Engineering from Bradley University. Herb worked for Caterpillar Tractor Company (CAT) for thirty-six years primarily as a service engineer and a troubleshooter. During his career he enjoyed living and working overseas in Switzerland (7 ½ years) and Hong Kong (3 ½ years). Herb retired from CAT and moved to Vero Beach in 1996 to live closer to his mother. He joined the Exchange Club of Vero Beach and served in several different capacities. Herb also served on several Boards: the Vero Isles HOA and the Indian River Symphonic Association. He was appointed by the City of Vero Beach to be a member of the Utility Commission and was on Citizens Advisory Committee, representing the Metropolitan Planning Organization. Herb also volunteered as a tutor at Vero Beach High School. In addition, Herb worked part-time as a consultant for EGSA for 20+ years.
Herb was married to Virginia Terrick Whittall for 23 years. They had two children, Laura and Paul both born while he served in the Army, for three years, in France. He then met Nancy Bostock and they were married for 34 years until her death in 2021. Nancy had three adult children from a previous marriage: Melody, King and Danny. Herb will be greatly missed by their five children, 11 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, numerous family members and friends.
In addition to his work and family, Herb was an avid sportsman and enjoyed the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing and sailing, and he played soccer, tennis, squash and skied. He represented Hong Kong sailing in the Flying Fifteen Worlds in New Zealand. He was the only American to serve as the Sailing Secretary at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club.
There will be no memorial service. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Herb's memory to the Exchange Club Scholarship Foundation, PO Box 1982, Vero Beach, FL 32961.
