H. A. Whit Whitten, 96, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones, Monday, June 2. He was one day shy of his 97th birthday. Born in McDonald, West Virginia on June 3, 1911 Mr. Whitten has been a resident of Brevard County for 48 years, moving to Melbourne from Huntington, West Virginia in 1960.
Whit was a wonderfully fascinating man with the gift of gab who never met a stranger. Stories of his adventurous childhood in West Virginia and world travel during his many years at sea entertained family and friends on many occasions. He had a full life, was blessed with good health and was a friend to all who knew him.
He was a Merchant Seaman for over 50 years, and served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After his retirement from the Military Sealift Command in 1988, Mr. Whitten spent his time volunteering as a mentor at Hans Christen Andersen Elementary school, participated actively with Meals on Wheels, and transported cancer patients to and from doctors appointments. He was devoutly religious and he and his wife Evelyn were original members of New Life Presbyterian Church in Viera.
He is survived by his loving wife of twenty five years Evelyn F. Whitten; daughter, Marilyn (Rick) Simon; step daughter- Terri (Lester) Kyle; step son-Doug (Tinda) Mars, four granddaughters: one grandson; and four great grandsons; brothers, Tommy Whitten and David Whitten; many nieces and nephews, and a constant companion, his dog Candi. He was preceded in death by his first wife Betty Junkin; son, Jack; two sisters, and four brothers.
Visitation and funeral services will be held at New Life Church in Viera, on Monday, June 9. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 5:00 pm and funeral services will begin at 5:00.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to New Life Church Building Fund 5445 Village Dr., Viera FL., 32955 or to VITAS Hospice 4450 West Eau Gallie Ave, Melbourne, FL.
