James D. Toby Modglin, 85, of Oak Harbor in Vero Beach, Florida was freed from his earthly bonds on July 21, 2008.
He was born on July 19, 1923 in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. He was the son of John Albert and Hazel Modglin. He graduated from Rollo High School in Rollo, Illinois.
He married Doris Schwebe on March 2, 1943 in Denver, Colorado where he was stationed in the United States Army Air Corps, during World War II.
The couple made their homes in Dekalb and Genoa, Illinois, and in Vero Beach, Florida where they retired in 1995. They also enjoyed spending time in the mountains near Bryson City, North Carolina.
Toby was employed for many years as a car dealer, and then as a salesman at 4th Street Mortors in Dekalb. He also worked as a real estate broker and was a partner Towne and Country Realty.
In 1973 he developed Ellwood Greens Golf Course and the existing subdivision in Genoa, Illinois. It is now known as The Oak Club of Genoa
He was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Dekalb, The Assembly of God Church in Rockford, Illinois, and the First Church of God in Vero Beach, Florida. He served on many committees and was an usher at all three churches. He was on the board where he an Doris lived at Oak Harbor, and was active in the adult #1 group of Koinonia. He was Vice President of The Mended Hearts Organization.
He will be missed by family and friends including his daughter Carol Irby, with whom he lived until his death in Vero Beach. One son, Jim (Sharon) Modglin of Genoa, Illinois and four grandchildren including Chad (Anna) Arthur of Elk Grove Village, Illinois, Gina (Gary) Nattrass of Alpharetta, Georgia, Kirk (Julee) Modglin of Colorado, and Trent Modglin of Chicago. He also leaves behind six great-grandchildren; Colin, Kaleigh and Morgan Nattrass, and Arianna, Alessia and Angelica Arthur, and with cousins, nieces and a nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Cliff, Vernon and John and his wife Doris in 2005.
A memorial celebration will take place 11 AM, Thursday, July 24, 2008 at the First Church of God in Vero Beach with Pastor Greg Sempsrott officiating. Inurnment will be at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida with his wife.
