James David Richardson, 80, of Vero Beach, Florida, passed away on October 10, 2024. He was born on November 27, 1943, in South Boston, Virginia, and his family lived on a farm between Pittsylvania and Halifax counties. He was the son of Rosser Daniel and Lucille VanAntwerp Richardson.
At the age of three, James moved to Vero Beach, where he later graduated from Vero Beach High School, Class of 1961. Following high school, he attended Florida State University where he earned his undergraduate degree, then served in the U.S. Army, and later obtained his law degree from University of Florida Law School. James began his career working at Piper, then by serving with the Florida Department of Transportation, and later as most of his career an attorney for the Internal Revenue Service in Washington, D.C.
Throughout his life, James lived mostly in Vero Beach, FL and Springfield, VA., also briefly Fayetteville, NC; Gainsville, FL, and Baton Rouge, LA. He married Carolyn Ann Osterhout on December 30, 1966, and together they raised two children: Charles Richardson and Alice Richardson Kimbrough, who is married to Chris Kimbrough. James took great pride in his role as a grandfather to Luke, Megan, and Raymond, and he cherished his relationships with his cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Marie Richardson Forsman; his brother, Troy Richardson; and is survived by his sister-in-law, Elsie Richardson.
A committed community member, James served as a Deacon and Trustee at Mt. Calvary Community Church (Alexandria, VA), and volunteered on the Vero Beach City Council and the Code Enforcement Board. He enjoyed singing, traveling, and exploring historical sites.
James will be remembered for his keen sense of humor, kindness, and dedication to family. A funeral service will be held at Cox Gifford Seawinds Funeral Home on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at 1:00PM. Burial in Crestlawn Cemetery will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Genesis Church or to First Baptist of Vero Beach. Online condolences may be made at coxgiffordseawinds.com
