Obituary

James White, of Vero Beach, FL, formerly of White Plains NY was born in Queens, New York on January 5, 1936. He died peacefully on April 6, 2023 at the Vero Beach Hospice House.

Jim joined the New York Fire Department in 1960 and retired as a Lieutenant in 1988. In 1963 he was awarded the John H. Prentice Medal for bravery. While fighting a fire he assisted in the rescue of a young mother and he then returned to the blaze. Crawling on his hands and knees he found an unresponsive child who survived after successful resuscitation. He often said that being a fire fighter was the best job in the world.

Upon his retirement Jim moved to Vero Beach and began a second career as a potter exhibiting at many art shows in the area. He opened the Klay Gallery & workshop where he designed and crafted many hand thrown pottery pieces.

Jim travelled the world, exploring new places, cultures and exotic destinations. In his younger years he camped throughout Europe and he visited all of the National Parks in the United States. He enjoyed sailing, music and dancing.

He leaves his loving companion and friend, Elisabeth R. Ollis.
