Obituary

Jerome Scheffres, age 92, of Vero Beach FL, formerly of Hunter NY, passed away at home on February 15, 2021.
Jerome was born in Brooklyn NY to Benjamin and Rose Scheffres on June 2, 1928. He married Joan Hylan in 1954 and they had two sons.


Jerome is survived by his wife, sons Benjamin (Jane) and Michael (Lynn), and granddaughters Elizabeth (Trey) Watts and Samantha (Brandon) Priebe. He was preceded in death by his parents and his three sisters Edith (Nathan) Warm, Laura (George) Goldstein, and Goldie (Matthew) Friedman. He graduated from Hunter – Tannersville Central School in 1947 and later served in the United States Army during the Korean War.


After his military service, he worked in the construction industry for I&OA Slutzky, building outdoor theaters, schools, and businesses in the Eastern United States. He started his own successful construction company a few years later.


After spending several winters in Florida, he and Joan moved to Vero Beach in 1979. He continued his career as a construction supervisor with Paul Jacquin & Sons, building a local police station, school, and church, as well as homes in the area. In retirement, Jerome was a member of the local hospital auxiliary and an avid fisherman, known for his flounder catches.
