Obituary

Joanne Johnson Miller, 90, of Vero Beach, Florida passed away peacefully at home on August 23, 2021. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on July 9, 1931 to Winnifred Campbell and Kennebert Johnson. She graduated with an associates degree in business from Boston University. She worked as an executive secretary for U.S. Senator Saltonstall of Massachusetts before marrying the late William James Davidson Miller of West Newton, Massachusetts in 1954.

She served on the Illinois State Board of Directors of the League of Women Voters, was a Girl Scout leader, and established the very first recycling program in the Chicago area. She was an avid curler and was on the national women's championship team in 1972. During her years in Florida she was a long-time member of the Indian River Golf Club and did volunteer work for the Special Olympics, the Humane Society, Head, Heart, and Hands, and the Scully-Welsh Cancer Center.

She is survived by her daughters Stacy Miller Leonard and Kristen Miller McFarland; grandchildren, Sean William Miller Leonard, Merideth Kathleen Leonard, Kaele Michelle Leonard and great grandson, William Peregrine Leonard.

A Celebration of Joanne's Life will be held Saturday, September 4, 2021 at 5 pm at the Indian River Club clubhouse. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Head, Heart, and Hands charity of the Indian River Golf Club.
