Obituary

In Memory  of Joe Barns Fredlock

Joe was born in Morgantown, West Virginia on October 14, 1933. He passed away peacefully on September 28, 2024, just shy of his ninety-first birthday.  He is survived by his wife Anne Holt Fredlock of Vero Beach FL, his daughters Amy Mintz of Herndon VA, married to Michael, parents of Aaron and his wife Bella, and Anna, and Jenny Franczak of Durham NC, parent of Amanda, Marlee, and Ian, his son-in-law Col. Robert B Holt Ret. of Morgantown WV, step-son John Paul Loehr, Ph.D. of Winnetka IL married to Beth, parents of Katelin and Charlotte, and his step-daughter Jennifer Nasca of Liberty Township OH, married to James, parents of Isabelle and Rocco.

He spent his childhood in Morgantown and attended Mercersburg Academy. He graduated from WVU with a degree in Psychology.  He was a residential builder, a long time member of the North Central West Virginia Home Builder's Association, and was president of the Association in 1971.  He built, owned, and managed student housing for many years. He mentored and guided students through various college issues. A few of these students became life long friends.

Joe had many interests, including a passion for golf. He loved to play as much as he loved the fellowship of other golfers. Over his lifetime he had seven hole-in-ones and shot his age or better twenty-one times.

Another of his favorite pastimes was boating. As with golf, he enjoyed sharing outings with friends and family.

He also loved traveling; he and Anne traveled extensively around the world thru six continents.

Joe loved new technology. He volunteered and mentored adults who wanted to learn or improve their computer skills. He and Anne taught computer classes on several of their cruise ship excursions. On one of their teaching cruises, Joe struck up a conversation with a gentleman who clearly knew his way around a computer. The gentleman explained that he had written a program that Apple rejected. Microsoft, however, was quite interested. That application was named Power Point, and the rest is history.

Joe was a gentleman who truly never met a stranger, he could strike up a conversation with anyone. He was known for his wonderful sense of humor and could light up a room with funny stories and his infectious laughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth Mustard Fredlock and James Raymond Fredlock, and his beloved brother and good friend, Jim Fredlock.
