John "Spike","Coach" Joseph Mahoney Jr. 87 of Fort Pierce, Fl passed away on September 1.2024, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born in Chester, PA John moved to Wilmington, DE where he lived until 2000 and then moved to Fort Pierce , Fl. John was preceded in death by his parents John J Sr and Loretta E Mahoney, his sister Maryanne Etnoyer and Regina (Al) Restaneo , Son-in-law James Wright and great-granddaughter Brianna. John is survived by his wife of 43 years Cecelia, children Stephen M Mahoney and Katherine Mahoney Wright, step-daughters Robin (Richard) McDonaugh and Tamera (Evan) Jones, 5 grandchildren and 4 Great-grandchildren. John served in the US Army for 2 years. He attended Villanova and Goldey Beacon College John worked for the DuPont Co as a Lab Technician for 28 years retiring in 1992. While working at DuPont he received a United States Patent of which he was very proud.
John graduated from St. James Boys Catholic High School in Chester Pa, class or 1954. While working at Du Pont John was a football coach for the Mt. Pleasant Squires midget football league. He then moved onto coach the Mt. Pleasant High School Green Knights which won the State of Delaware High School Championship in 1981. He was an ardent Sports fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and the Philadelphia Eagles.
While living in Spanish Lakes Country Club Village he was very active in all the community affairs.
He played in several Golf Leagues, played Bocce and for many years devoted lots of hours running the Senior Fitness Games along with Gerri Purcell, JoAnn Camino and his wife. John always had a story to tell and lived life to the fullest. He will be missed by all.
There will no services as per John's request. There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date.
