John William Gallimore, Jr., 96, died May 12, 2017 in Vero Beach, Florida.

John was born in Bronx, New York to John William Gallimore, Sr. and Lillian Helen (Polster) Gallimore. They moved to New Hyde Park, New York, where John and his sister Lillian Elizabeth (Betty) Campbell, who preceded him in death, were raised.

John enlisted in the army after Pearl Harbor and participated in the battle at Normandy Beach to protect our freedom. John was captured by the Germans in France and was a P.O.W. till the end of the war.

John returned to New Hyde Park where he married Vera Selion and raised their two children William Peter Gallimore and Jean Marie Kunath. He was married to Vera until her death in 2012.

He worked for Con Edison for 35 years, first as a laborer, then lead mechanic, where he also instructed new mechanics. He later became a foreman, a scheduler and finally, chief scheduler.

He retired in 1983 to Calabash, North Carolina for 20 years, then bought into Indian River Estates in Vero Beach, Florida, in 2003, where he lived until his death.

John was known as the one to call to "fix" anyone's camera, TV, VCR, cable, or phone, and even purchased and gave away clocks for the blind. He was always there to help.

At Indian River Estates, he initiated the filming of the church services with Chaplain Bill Meade, so homebound residents could view the services in their own home. John also encouraged IRE to participate in the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. to see the WWII monument. On November 6, 2010, he participated in the Honor Flight with four other resident veterans with Chaplain Bill Meade as their guardian.

John is survived by his son, William Peter Gallimore and daughter, Jean Marie Kunath (Erwin Kunath III); three grandchildren, Julie A. Kunath, Jason J. Kunath and Kelly C. Maloney (William Maloney); and 6 great-grandchildren.

Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
