Obituary

The world was left August 10, 2022 , devoid of the gentle, kind presence of Jon Dwight Hoffman. The best friend of many, Dwight's passing brought tears to old and new friends alike.

Born May 24, 19 38, in Minnesota , Dwight graduated from Hopkins High School in 1956.
After 2 years of college at UM, he took a year off to be a ski bum, fueling a lifelong love of travel. He then returned to college for a final two years. As the Best Man at his friend's wedding in July 1963, he met the best friend of the bride, Barbara Mensing. She invited him to her home for the night. In the morning, Dwight emerged from the guest room, met her parents and many siblings, and married her January 25, 19 64.

During the next 58 ½ years Dwight lived a good life filled with hard work, good friends, great golf, enriching volunteer activities, family adventures, and world travel. His career started at Cargill in Minneapolis , transferred to Chicago then to Louisville , KY , where he became a stockbroker with Merrill Lynch. Later, in Louisville and Lexington , he started and ran Hoffman's Casual Furniture and Fireside Shoppe. During those years he volunteered with the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program, mentoring and taking one young man into their home, and then mentoring another. Both have grown into successful adults with their own wives and children now.

In 1998 Dwight and Barbara moved to Florida , bought a boat and planned to live aboard for 3 to 5 years. Living aboard for 5 years, they took many trips up the Intercoastal, to the Bahamas , Florida Keys and Gulf Coast . They bought a home in Vero Beach in 2003. Hurricane Katrina in 2005 sank The Three to Five, bringing an end to 7 years of boating.

Back on land, Dwight became a driver for Indian River County Meals on Wheels. We are certain that his handsome face and delightful manor brought weekly sunshine to his clients. His favorite dog,

Kona, became a mascot for Pets Meals on Wheels. In 2015, he joined the country's Volunteer Ambulance Service until he retired in 2020. He enjoyed serving those who needed an arm to steady them, a smile to encourage them, and an open heart to love them.

In 2005 Dwight decided he wanted to make the 800 km pilgrimage walk across northern Spain on the El Camino. Barbara warmed up to the idea and decided to join him. They trained for the trip then embarked on the trail April 18, 2005 . Hand in hand, together they reached the Cathedral of Santiago on June 5. The nearly 500-mile trek was a challenge, but they remember it as their best adventure.

Through all these years, Dwight's love of golf—the game and the camaraderie—was a glue that kept him close to many golfing buddies and prompted him to travel to play courses in beautiful places, even St. Andrews Old Course where he scored 86 in 1987. Along the way he garnered a few trophies and at least 4 commendations for holes-in-one.

Dwight is survived by his wife Barbara Mensing Hoffman; nephews Gregory Hoffman and his wife, Pam, of Dallas , TX . and Jeffery Hoffman, his wife, Jeanhee, and two sons, Alex and Andrew, of Raleigh , North Carolina and dozens of in-laws. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Edna Johnson Hoffman, and his brother, Tauber "Toby".

An avid dog lover, Dwight grew up with boxers, but it was the little schnauzers he had in Vero Beach that truly captured his heart. Kona and Katie also preceded him in death.
