Obituary

Joseph Barnard, 86, of Vero Beach, FL died Friday, July 23, 2010 at the Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach.
Mr. Barnard was born July 28, 1923 in Washington, D.C., and moved to Vero Beach 20 years ago from Castleton, VA.
He was a veteran of World War II serving in the 82nd Airborne Division, 504th Parachute Infantry of the U.S. Army in the European Theater. Mr. Barnard received the Purple Heart with two bronze oak leaf clusters. He worked for the Department of Agriculture and the National Institutes of Health. Mr. Barnard did volunteer work for the Democratic Party and was a member of the American Legion and St. John of the Cross in Vero Beach.
Survivors include his son David (Lisa) Barnard of Oakton, VA, daughter Joanne (Gary) Hornbaker of Berryville, VA, sisters Mary Lucetta of South Bend, IN, Betty Callen of Rockville, MD, and Marjorie Barnard of Silver Spring, MD, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his sons Robert and Brian.
Services: A memorial mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am, Friday, July 30, 2010 at St. John of the Cross Catholic Church. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA.
