Josephine Ann "Jo" Sande, 88, of Village Green, Vero Beach, Florida, died Thursday, August 27, 2009 at Indian River Medical Center of Vero Beach after an extended illness. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Olav "Skip" Sande, who passed on April 6 of this year.
Mrs. Sande was born April 13, 1921 in Brooklyn, New York, to Anthony and Anna Singler. She was married on July 18, 1948 in Ruby, NY, lived in Lake Katrine, and moved to Village Green 22 years ago.
A 1939 graduate of Kingston High School and a local business school, she worked during WWII at Hercules Powder Mill in Port Ewen, NY, where she ran machines trimming primer cups. She was a personal secretary at Sears Roebuck, Kingston, NY, and a toll collector on the New York State Thruway. While living in Lake Katrine, she was a founder of the Town of Ulster Library, member of the Mid-Hudson Rose Society, and Life Member of the Sons of Norway, Hudson Valley Lodge 432, Kingston, NY; a Girl Scout Leader, Cub Scout Den Mother, 4-H Leader, and neighborhood news correspondent. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, cooking, playing cards and square dancing.
She volunteered for 10 years at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, volunteered at McKee Botanical Gardens, was a member of the Vero Beach Orchid Society, Rare Fruits Council of Vero, North American Quilling Guild, and Florida Audobon Society. She was well known for organizing dances, bus trips, and social activities at Village Green.
Surviving is her son, Richard James Sande of Albuquerque, NM, daughters Patricia Brodowski of Hampstead, MD, and Marie Sande of Lake Worth; cousin Madeline Suresky of Bayonne, NJ, and three grandchildren.
Local memorial services for Mr. and Mrs. Sande will be held in November. Interment will be held at a later date in the South Florida Veterans National Cemetery, Boynton Beach, Florida. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to an organization of your choice.
