L. Glen Gillespie, 91, of Vero Beach, FL, went to be with the Lord
on Sunday night
, January 3, 2021.
Born July 17, 1929, in Sophia, WV, he was the son of Leonard Jackson Gillespie and Elva P. (Greene) Gillespie.
Glen's beloved wife of 65 years, Nancy L. (Beegle) Gillespie, preceded him to heaven in May of 2017.
After growing up in East Gulf and Sophia, WV, Glen's parents moved him, his brother Douglas Gillespie (deceased), and sister, Wilma (Gillespie) Fogle of Thurmont, MD to Baltimore, MD. There he played trombone in the marching band, graduated from Southern High School in 1948, and was offered a full scholarship to MIT.
Choosing instead to "be his own boss", Glen and his father purchased a dairy farm in Emmitsburg, MD. He met Nancy and it was love at first sight for both of them. After they married in 1952, Glen served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany. Upon his return, they bought the adjoining farm and started their family. Eight years later they purchased a third farm, built a herd of 150 holstein dairy cows, and raised five children. In 1966 Glen and Nancy and his parents sold the farms and moved to Vero Beach, FL. For the past 54 years Glen maintained that he lived in the most beautiful town with the best climate in the world. Glen was an original founding partner of Gillespie Builders LTD. Over the ensuing decades, he enjoyed faceting gemstones, fishing and boating, salmon fishing in Alaska, and traveling America by camper. Glen also enjoyed deer hunting. Thirteen years ago he rekindled that hobby, and harvested his last buck just a month and a half ago.
Glen was a warm, outgoing man who loved people. He quickly put others at ease, engaged them in conversation, and loved to laugh. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church for the past 54 years where he had previously served as an Elder. Since childhood, his faith in Jesus Christ was an important part of who he was.
Glen is survived by his five children, Linda Gillespie, Debbie Boneta and husband Jose, Kathy Smith and husband Eric, John Gillespie and wife Kara, and Treva Burbine and husband Norm, all of Vero Beach, FL; as well as six grandchildren, Rachel Bowman and husband Ben, Sarah Lang and husband Ryan, Treva Cofer and husband Bud, Jessica Brown and husband Jared, John Gillespie II, Jason Gillespie and wife Ashley, ten great-grandchildren, and his sister Wilma (Gillespie) Fogle. He also leaves behind close friends Sue Marik, Gerda Smith, Jean Leswing and many others at The Isles of Vero.
A Memorial Service will be held
on Saturday, January 23 at 11:00 a.m.
at Grace Lutheran Church in Vero Beach, FL with Pastor Matthew Luttman officiating. Luncheon to follow.
