Obituary

Leona l. (Adair) Allen, age 70, passed away peacefully August 10, 2024, at the VNA Hospice House of complications related to her Parkinson's disease. Her devoted, loving husband of 49 years, J L Allen remained at her side.

Leona was born March 1954, the oldest of three daughters to the late Paul and Mary (Konkle) Adair, in Ravenna, Ohio. She graduated in 1972 from Ravenna High School. After high school, she worked as a legal secretary. Wanting to experience more, she joined the Air Force, that decision turned into a thirty year career.

Her first duty assignment was in Phoenix, AZ where she met her future husband J, who was also in the Air Force. During her career, she also managed to complete her college AA degree. She ended her career in South Carolina at McEntire. The tour in South Carolina was important for many reasons, but foremost, it was where she gave birth to her beloved son Ryan. The senior staff there thought so highly of her, that one Saturday in front of her family. the vice wing commander personally took her on an F16 flight. By the end of her career, she had reached the rank of Chief Master Sergeant (E9) and was the highest-ranking enlisted person on her base, she was also the first active-duty female to ever reach this rank on McEntire.

After she and J retired, the family moved to Vero Beach, FL. There she went to work for the Clerk of Court for the Indian River County Commissioners. She continued to work there until she voluntarily stepped down due to her illness.

Her blessed life was more than work and school. She was deeply religious and she and J had saved well enabling them to generously give to both church and charities while also living life to the fullest. They attended more concerts, sporting events, plays, etc., including on Broadway and NASCAR championships, than can be counted. Their love of travel never ended. They have visited most of the states including Alaska and Hawaii and the majority of national parks. They have also visited several continents with too many countries to list. They were also able to enjoy some great experiences, parasailing, hot air ballooning, helicopting to the top of a mountain range to walk on a glacier, sitting on a hillside opposite an erupting volcano, to standing in a launch silo within touching distance of a live nuclear missile. However, her greatest experiences were their son's marriage to Lauren and the birth of their granddaughter Paisley who she will forever watch over. It was a wonderful life well lived.

To know Leona was to love her. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her beloved husband JL Allen, her son Ryan Allen (Lauren), her granddaughter Paisley, all of Vero or Sebastian, FL. In addition she is survived by two sisters, Janet Giulitto (Vito) of Rootstown, OH and their sons Anthony and Jonathan and their families, and her sister Holly Jensen (Mark) of Montana. She is also survived by several sisters not of blood. Cindy Lussier (Kurt), Laura Parent (Jason), Judy Laraby, Marcy Sieli, Jill Brodeur and Elma Roen (Ted). She also will be deeply missed by a large extended family and numerous friends.

A celebration of Leona's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Leona's name to VNA & Hospice Foundation, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960.
