IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Louis
Epstein
November 17, 1929 – March 20, 2020
LOUIS EPSTEIN, 90, of Vero Beach FL, passed away on March 20, 2020. He was born in Reading PA on November 17, 1929, and grew up there and in Philadelphia PA. He is predeceased by his wife, Bernadine Mae Epstein (Blair); his parents, Isadore and Yetta Anderson Epstein; his brothers, Morris (Grace), Harry (Ruth), Charles (Edith) and Norman (Beverly); his sisters, Ruth Shapiro (Maurice) and Ann Bruckner (Dave); and his stepson, Barry Ramey, and stepdaughter Barbara Ramey. He is survived by his stepdaughter Sharon Ramey Hann (Robert); his granddaughters Alison Ramey and Dawn Ramey Beckford (Timoy); and his great-granddaughter, Jaylyn Hegedus. He was married to his late wife, Bernadine, for almost 50 years. He was a generous person, and a loving dad to his stepchildren, his granddaughters, and his great-granddaughter. Lou was a singular person. He always had a joke that would make you groan, a smile and a good word for people.
Lou graduated from Northeast High School in Philadelphia in 1948. He is a veteran of the Korean War, having served from 1948 to 1949. Lou was signed up as a pitcher for a New York Yankees farm team in 1951 and later with the Cleveland Indians, but decided not to pursue a career in baseball. His baseball expertise made him a real winner with his son Barry's friends when Barry was a kid.
Lou retired from the Miami Police Department, where he worked in community service for over 10 years. He was well-liked by the police officers and other staff with whom he worked as well as by the community he served. After retiring, he and his wife moved to Vero Beach, where he lived for the past 20 years. He stayed active up until a few months before his passing. His family celebrated his 90 th birthday in November 2019 with a surprise visit and brunch at Cobalt in Vero Beach.
He had a gift for gab, which is to say he liked to talk. He used this gift in his own radio show as a volunteer host for the past ten years, both on public radio and on other stations. He always talked about things that would make people smile or help them; he refused to talk about politics or religion. He made friends easily and was well-liked by his neighbors, the people he worked with at the radio station, the people he did business with, and his many friends. He will be missed by a lot of people.
Lou used to say that we all have an expiration date and we don't know what it is, so we should live each day to its fullest. He tried to do that. He had a youthful mentality and was always mistaken for a much younger person. We will miss his loving care, his grin, his ornery behavior and his sense of humor, although maybe not all of his jokes.
A memorial service will be held at Cox-Gifford Seawinds, Vero Beach, on Friday, July 10, 2020, at 5 pm.
