Major John Jack J. McCarthy, Jr., US Army Retired, of Vero Beach, FL died Thursday, May 22, 2008 at the VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach.
Major McCarthy was born August 16, 1919 in the Bronx, NY and moved to Vero Beach 35 years ago from Ridgewood, NJ.
He had served in the US Army until retiring at the rank of Major and was a veteran of WW II and the Korean War. After retiring from the Army he remained in the US Army Reserve and went to work as Assistant Director of Transportation for ConEd of New York City. He had been a member and usher at Holy Cross Catholic Church and St. Helen Catholic Church in Vero Beach and Mt. Carmel in Ridgewood, NJ. Other affiliations include the Knights of Columbus in Vero Beach and New Jersey, the Vero Beach Yacht Club where he served on the House Committee, the Vista Royal Golf Club of Vero Beach, and the VFW and American Legion in Vero Beach and New Jersey.
Survivors include his wife Edith Ann McCarthy of Vero Beach; daughters Joan Ann Rowan of Port Clinton, OH and Barbara J. Kinnaugh of Middletown, NJ; brother Bernard McCarthy of California; step-sons Phillip Kaeser of Crystal Lake, MN and Jeff Kaeser of Lenexa, KS; five grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; three step grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife Dorothy.
Services: A Mass will be celebrated 10 AM, Saturday, May 24, 2008 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Vero Beach followed by military honors provided by VFW Post 3918 of Vero Beach. Interment will take place at a later date at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus, NJ.
