Obituary

Mary Lillian (Doores) Allen was born Jan 21, 1921 in Bealton, VA. She passed away after a short illness on August 1, 2014. She grew up in Sunset Hills, VA, a village near Herndon, VA. After high school she attended business school and went to work as a civilian for the Marine Corps in 1941. She enlisted in the Marine Corps Women's Reserve on the first day possible in 1943, becoming only the 26th woman to join the Reserve during World War II. While stationed in Washington DC, she met and married Richard H. Allen who became a Captain in the Marine Corps. They were married for 53 years. After active duty as a Staff Sergeant at the Marine Air Station in Santa Barbara, CA, she returned to work for the Marine Corps for a total of 32 years in Washington, DC, retiring as the Records Officer of Marine Corps Records. Mary lived for a time in Virginia Beach, VA and moved to Vero Beach, FL in 1988. Mary was an active resident of ACTS, Indian River Estates for 17 years and was an avid golfer until becoming ill in March. She was also an active member of the Sand Ridge Ladies Golf League in Vero Beach. Mary will be remembered for her unquenchable can-do attitude, her generosity of spirit, her marvelous outgoing personality, her infectious laugh, and her enviably accurate golf game. She is survived by two sisters, Katheryn Roman and Elaine Starkey; her son, Eugene Allen and his wife, Darlene Allen; her two granddaughters, Nicole Allen and Michele Britt, their husbands, Kevin Thalacker and Jim Britt, and two great grandchildren, Evelin and Lila Thalacker.

A service will be held at Indian River Estates East Building at 2:00pm Saturday, August 9th
