Max Otto Schober passed into eternal life on Fathers Day, June 21, 2009. .He was born in Hoboken, New Jersey on December 24, 1914, where he spent his childhood before moving to Weehawken, New Jersey where he graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and was the star player on the basketball team.
After graduation, he worked for a few years on passenger ships since it was during the Great Depression. He then enrolled at Pace Institute, from which he graduated with a BS Certificate in Accounting. After graduation, he worked for a Certified Public Accountant for two years, and left there to work for Musak.
In September of 1941 he was drafted into the United States Army and was sent to Camp Croft, South Carolina for basic training, after which he was sent to Northern Ireland on March 1942 with the 34th Division 125th Field Artillery for training for World War II. From there he was sent to Oran, North Africa and the Tunisian Campaign on December 19, 1942 where he was under Gen. George Patton. He was the liaison between the artillery and the infantry in active combat.
On Sept.1943 he left North Africa for the invasion of Italy., From Salerno he went through Italy to Cassino, where the United States Army was stopped, fighting at Montecassino during the winter of 1943 and 1944. That was a bloody battle, and Max was there during the bombing of the Monastery which was at the top of the mountain.
From there he was sent to Anzio for the invasion there, and after that fought all the way to Bologna, Italy until February 1945 when he was finally returned to the United States for R & R. While he was home, peace in Europe was declared and he was honorably discharged from the service having served almost four years in active combat.
He married Jane Cox in April 1945, and they had a daughter, Bonni and later a son, Brian. Max worked for Wiss and Sons in Newark, New Jersey, where he rose to the position of Assistant Comptroller. He was with that company for 25 years and retired in 1974.
In 1972 he met and married Alberta Clark Hendrickson, a fellow accountant, with whom he went into business in Lavallette, New Jersey. They ran their accounting, tax and computer practice for the next eight years, after which they sold that business and moved to Vero Beach, Florida.
Max leaves his wife Alberta, as well as his daughter, Bonni Cohen, and son-in-law Steve; a son, Dr. Brian Schober of New York City; two grandsons, Alexander and Jared Cohen of Chicago and New York; a step-daughter, Bette Walsh of Vero Beach, Florida; a step-son John Hendrickson, Sr. of New Jersey, and two step-grandsons, Lt. Commander John Hendrickson, U.S. Navy in California, and Erik Hendrickson of New Jersey.
Max was loved by all and will be greatly missed. He was an active member of
First Presbyterian Church, the VFW, and the Masons. In lieu of flowers, he asked that contributions be made in his memory to First Presbyterian Church.
Services: A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 520 Royal Palm Blvd., Vero Beach, at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 27, to be followed by a reception at the church.
