Michael Coughlin's Obituary
Michael Robert Coughlin passed away on April 11, 2016 at the age of 61 after a courageous battle with lung cancer in Vero Beach, Florida. He was born on August 10, 1954 in Marlborough, Massachusetts to John P. Coughlin Jr. and the late Eleanor G. Coughlin.
He is survived by his father, John P. Coughlin Jr. of Vero Beach, Florida; daughter, Kelly K. Coughlin of Corpus Christi, Texas; brothers John P. Coughlin III (Holly) of Vero Beach, Florida and James P. Coughlin (Patricia) of Hobe Sound, Florida; nephews Sean Coughlin (Kim) and Ryan Coughlin of Westfield, Massachusetts, Craig Coughlin (Elizabeth) of Hobe Sound, Florida; nieces, Kristy DiGioia (Nick) and Kailey Coughlin of Hobe Sound, Florida; and pet cat, Cocoa.
Michael graduated from Westfield High in 1973 in Westfield, Massachusetts. He also graduated from the University of Florida in 1980 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He simultaneously received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and served as the Commander of Delta Company, 10th Engineer Battalion in Kitzingen, Germany. After obtaining the rank of Captain, he decided to enter the civilian work force to test his engineering skills. He held numerous positions to include at the city of Charlotte, North Carolina, Insituform of Jacksonville, Florida and APAC of Miami, Florida.
Michael was most proud of his daughter, Kelly and thought the sun and moon set on her. They took many vacations together. He loved sports especially the Florida Gators and the Boston Bruins and any night that football was on was a good one. He enjoyed listening and singing to Jimmy Buffett's "Son of a Sailor" and Frank Sinatra songs. He never complained about his situation but instead soldiered through it while maintaining his sense of humor. He loved his dogs over the years, Smedley, Brittany, Boo and Patches.
