Obituary: Olav Leonard Skip Sande
Olav Leonard Skip Sande , 91, of Village Green, Vero Beach, Florida, died Monday, April 6, 2009 at Consulate Health Care of Vero Beach after an extended illness.
Mr. Sande was born September 12, 1917 in Germantown, Pennsylvania, to the late Olav T. and Edith R. Sande. He lived in Lake Katrine, New York, and retired from 34 years as a supervisor at Schatz-Federal Bearings, Poughkeepsie, New York, and moved to Village Green in 1986.
A WWII veteran of the US Navy, he was a plankowner of the USS Massachusetts BB59, serving as machinist mate and was awarded a Bronze Star for heroic engine repair during action in the Pacific Theater. He later served aboard the USS Missouri. He repaired ships instruments on the USS Massachusetts during its restoration into a museum at Battleship Cove, Fall River, Massachusetts, and his recollections were recorded for the museums oral history collection.
He received several awards for set construction at the Vero Beach Theatre Guild, was recognized for restoration of the McKee Botanical Garden of Vero Beach. He was a Life Member of the Sons of Norway, Hudson Valley Lodge 432, Kingston, New York, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1386 of Kingston, New York. He was an avid fisherman, played golf, constructed displays for the Mid-Hudson Rose Society in Kingston, New York, and was active in the community of Village Green at Vero Beach.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Josephine Jo (nee Singler) Sande, of Vero Beach; one son, Richard James Arthur Sande and his wife, Jill Sande, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, two daughters Patricia Sande Brodowski and husband Robert Brodowski of Hampstead, Maryland, and Marie Irene Sande of Lake Worth, Florida; sister Frances Smedley and her husband Dennis Smedley of Buchanan, Michigan; sister-in-law Doris Sande of Lexington, Kentucky; and three grandchildren, Erik Sande and his wife Teresa, of Boise, Idaho; Adam Sande Brodowski and Emily Sande Brodowski, of Hampstead, Maryland; six nieces and nephews, Norman David Sande and Christine Sande of Lexington, Kentucky; Mark Smedley and his wife, Nicole, of Gartringen, Germany; Lynn Smedley of Buchanan, Michigan; and Robert Stanley and his wife, Bobi, of Deland, FL; Lake Katrine, NY, and Ronald Stanley, of Kingston, NY; and one great-niece.
He was predeceased by his brother, Norman J. Sande of Lexington, Kentucky, and his sister, Edith and her husband, Walter Stanley, of Lake Katrine, New York.
Local services will be held at a later date. Interment will be held at a later date in the Veterans National Cemetery, Boynton Beach, Florida. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to an organization of your choice.
