IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Raymond Joseph
Cawley
July 25, 1946 – May 10, 2023
Raymond J. Cawley, age 76, passed away on May 10, 2023, at the VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach, Florida, with his devoted wife of 50 years by his side.
Born on July 25, 1946, in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, Ray was challenged early in life by the sudden death of his father when he was only 16, followed a few years later by the loss of his mother. While raising his younger brother, Scott, he managed to put himself through the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
After graduating, Ray worked for a brief time for Honeywell. Soon, Cable TV, in its infancy, caught Ray's attention. Over time, this interest became his successful career. He built state of the art systems along the east coast from Maine to Virginia, including his hometown of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, retiring in 1989.
Ray also ran Doylestown Airport for five years and was associated with Piper Aircraft Training Center for four years in Vero Beach. Flying was his passion and he earned Private Pilot, Multiengine, and Instrument Ratings, first flying his Turbo Dakota and then his Malibu Mirage.
Early on, Ray was a ski instructor and met his wife by renting skis to her. Judy and Ray enjoyed countless trips to Vail and Beaver Creek, Colorado.
Surfing was also a sport Ray embraced, hitting the beach before his job as a cook at the College Grill in Ocean City, New Jersey.
Most precious to him were his years playing Polo at Windsor where he was Co-patron for the Jaguar Team, and in Pennsylvania, for the Bucks County Team. His horses were his children.
Over the years, Ray was a member of Huntingdon Valley Country Club and Old York Road Country Club in Pennsylvania, and in Florida, a member of Windsor Golf and Polo Club, and Indian River Club.
Ray is survived by his wife Judith, who loved him beyond words; brother-in-law, William Fries (Eileen); nephew William Fries (Krista); niece Elizabeth Anderson (Alex); sister-in-law Nancy Fries; nephew Aaron Fries; niece Abish Fries. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Catherine, his brother Scott, his two sisters, Judith and Catherine, and brother-in-law, Charles Fries.
In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to the VNA Hospice of Indian River County, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, Florida, 32960.
A memorial service celebrating Ray's life will take place at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at the Community Church of Vero Beach, 1910 23rd Street.
