Obituary

Our family regrets to report the passing of our father, Colonel John Donald Gordon, (U.S. Army) on June 25, 2019.

Born in North Andover, Massachusetts on March 18, 1925, to his parents John Francis Gordon and Hilda Dickson Gordon.

He is survived by children, John R. Gordon, Karyl A. Kolakowski, Donald S. Gordon, grandchildren, Derek Gordon, Shawn Rene Ward, Darrin Saunders, and Ryan Tinkle.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Marcelle Severance Gordon, son, Bruce A. Gordon, and siblings, Robert Gordon, Barbara Jean Winning, and his daughter-in-law, Lockey Saunders Gordon.

Upon graduation from Johnson H.S. in North Andover, Massachusetts he enlisted and was trained as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps.  Upon his completion of training, he served from 1944-45 as a fighter pilot in Europe until the end of World War II.  A few years later, he enlisted in the regular Army.

Beginning as an 18-year-old pilot in WW II and concluding with his retirement in 1980 his military career included many assignments throughout the world, to include Germany, Japan, Okinawa, Vietnam (where he received the Purple Heart), with several stateside assignments to include Hawaii, Virginia, California and Washington D.C.

Throughout his long and distinguished career, his wife, and the mother of his children, Marcelle Severance Gordon, provided continuous love and support until her passing in 1978.

His wife, Marcelle and his children, John, Karyl, Bruce (deceased), and Donald often accompanied him on many of his assignments.

Our family and his Country have lost one more member of what has come to be known as "The Greatest Generation".

He will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery alongside our mother and his beloved wife, Marcelle on Friday, January 24, 2020, at 11:00 A.M. with the service to begin in the Old Post Chapel at Fort Myer, Virginia with burial to follow immediately afterwards.
