Obituary

Richard Coe Ryan

Richard Coe Ryan of Vero Beach, Florida (formerly Williamstown, New York), passed away at age 90 on January 25, 2026.  Affectionately known as "Dick" he was born in Oswego, New York on November 13, 1935, and spent much of his childhood in Camden, New York.  His parents were Richard Glenn and Vietta Frances (Coe) Ryan, who resided in Camden for many years and predeceased him.

He graduated from Camden Central School in 1953 and Paul Smith's College in 1955, with a degree in Forestry.  In early 1956, he began serving his country in the United States Army Corps of Engineers with duty stations in the United States and Japan.  Early in his military service he climbed Mount Rainier in the state of Washington (14,410'), one of the highest mountains in the contiguous United States.  He served as a construction surveyor with the United States Army Engineer Group on the island of Okinawa, Japan, for nearly 3 years.  In 1958, he married Fujiko Tokiyoshi, who he met while stationed in Okinawa.  They shared over 41 years of marriage until her passing in 1999.

Following his military discharge in 1960, he began employment with New York State, which lasted for 35 years.  He worked on land and marine surveys and public land acquisitions throughout New York State for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.  Later in his civil service career he worked on right-of-way acquisitions for the New York State Department of Transportation at locations centered in the Southern Tier of New York.  He was licensed to practice both as a land surveyor and as a real estate broker.

After retirement from civil service, he formed his own business, RYAN's COMPANY, a forensic real estate investigative consultant services firm based in Laurel, New York; on Long Island where he raised his family and lived for 30 years.  He loved living on Long Island with he and Fujiko enjoying time fishing on the waterways in and around Suffolk County, and on outings with the East End Surf Fishing Club.  He served many years as a volunteer chairman of the land preservation programs for the Town of Southold in Suffolk County, New York.

In 2003, he fully retired from his business and moved to Williamstown, New York where he rediscovered high school sweetheart, Carol Jeanne Delarm, who he married in 2004 with her later predeceasing him in 2013.  His years of retirement were spent at his residence in Williamstown or, during the winter months, at his second residence in Vero Beach.  He had recently become a full-time resident of Vero Beach in October 2025.

Mr. Ryan is survived by: sons Ricky (Terri), of Clinton, Tennessee and Kelly (Laura), of Springfield, Vermont; twin sister Ann Hunt, of Mount Morris, New York; brother John Ryan, of Jordan, New York; sister Susan (Paul) Abendroth, of Yellow Springs, Ohio; grandchildren Abby (Chance) Bunch and their son Beau, Rachel (Jonathan) Barker, Carly, Emi, Richie, Dawson, Alexander, Skyler (Matthew) Ryan and their sons Zeke and Teddy; and one step-granddaughter Nova.  He also leaves behind sister-in-law Elena Ryan of Jordan, New York, as well as his dear lady companion Carolyn Moir of Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia, Canada.  In addition to his parents and wives, Mr. Ryan was predeceased by his sister Jean Venditte.

A committal service with military honors will be held on April 10, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton, New York.

Arrangements are under the direction of Cox-Gifford Seawinds Funeral Home.
