Vero Beach, Florida- Robert J. Smith passed away peacefully at VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach on Monday, January 23, 2012 after a long battle with COPD. He was born July 5, 1921 in Nebraska to Jospeh and Eunice Smith. His career in broadcasting started in radio in the late 1930's in Cicero, Illinois. He made the transition to television in the 50's and retired from that field many years later. He enlisted in the Marines during WWII and was stationed out of San Diego and assigned special detachment to the Battleship Texas in the South Pacific.
He was preceded in death by three wives, Dorothy, Mary and Deloris. He is survived by his daughter Sallie (Michael) Hyatt; daughter Connie Johnson and two grandaughters, Nicole Sayson and Ally (Bobby) Denison. Also four great-grandaughters Chloe, Kait, Lexi and Emma. Bob also leaves behind his brother in law Rolly (Colleen) Bowler and Gene (Marilyn) Bowler and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his granddog, Finn.
Servives will be private and held at a later date.
