Obituary

Dr. Robert E. Stevens, 88, of Vero Beach, passed away on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at the VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach.

Dr. Stevens was born September 19, 1924 in Lexington, KY. He had been a resident of Vero Beach for 7 years, coming from Virginia.

He served in the United States Air Force in Italy during WWII as a navigator and bombardier.

When he returned home he attended the College of William and Mary in Virginia and received a Bachelor's of Arts degree. He also attended North Carolina State University where he earned a Bachelor's of Science Degree. Later he returned to North Carolina State and earned his Doctorate degree.

While working for the South Carolina Wildlife Commission he perfected a technique of fish in vitro fertilization, and pioneered the striped bass hatcheries throughout the United States. Following his research he traveled the world teaching other scientists the process of fish hatcheries, and furthering his understanding of aquaculture. He ended his career as the Head of Fisheries Research with the Department of the Interior.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Mary Stevens; daughters, Victoria T. Stevens of Miami; Mary S. Torres of Vero Beach and Robin A. Arnold of Alexandria, VA; and 7 grandchildren.

Services: A graveside service is planned in Leeds Cemetery in Leeds, VA.
