Obituary

Our much loved Wayne Rutland took his last breath at Hospice House December 31, 2022. His life added so much to the world into which he'd been born on October 30, 1938.

He joined the US Navy one week out of high school, and in his 22 year career in nuclear submarines this brilliant man rose through the ranks as a "Mustang" to a Naval Officer.

During his service to this country he crewed on four nukes; taught nuclear physics at the Navy's school for submariners, and was hand picked by Admiral Rickover to serve as his personal representative submarine construction at Newport News Shipyard.

Wayne married Janis Durr, who raised their three fine sons, Mickey; Darryl, and Jeffery, the men of which he was so proud and his nine grandchildren: Whitney, Zachary, Claire Weindardt, Emma Schultz, Hannah McMorrow, Luke, Silas, Ketsia and Justice. Also survived by his sisters Sandi Webb and Lori Castro.

After retirement, he consulted on nuclear safety with several of America's largest nuclear power companies, including the very dangerous now closed Rocky Flats plant. It was then he met and married Carroll Anne Janssen. After 31 years of a marriage filled with joy and adventure she was by his side as he peacefully left this life. Together the two had spent several happy years sailing their catamaran, Joyous2, through the islands and into the Caribbean settling in Vero twenty years ago. Here Wayne became active in the local Submarine Veterans group. It was his wish to have a Navy burial at sea and join those who gone before on "Eternal Patrol".

"Eternal Father strong to save, whose arm doth still the restless wave....hear us when we cry to thee for those in peril on the sea."

In lieu of flowers for the service, it is Carroll's request that you give flowers to your spouse.

A Memorial Service with Military Honors will be held at 11am, Monday, February 13, 2023 at Veteran's Memorial Island Sanctuary, Vero Beach.
