Sarah graduated from Monroe HS in 1949 and started working for Belk's Dept. Stores in Charlotte NC before moving a few years later to Washington DC. While in Washington she worked for Eastman Kodak Co and often enjoyed helping their development department test new Eastmancolor films. While in Washington she rekindled an earlier relationship from NC and married SSgt Rance P (RP) Plyler, from Waxhaw NC, on Thanksgiving Day November 1955 at the Bolling AFB chapel in Washington.
By spring 1957 Sarah and RP were off to an assignment in Scotland, United Kingdom, where they enjoyed making many new friendships with Scottish folk in and around Lanark. While in Scotland she had two children, first Emma in 1957 and then James in 1958 before returning in 1960 to America for RP's new assignment with the National Security Agency at Ft Meade Maryland. In 1962 while living at Ft Meade she added twin sons to their young family with the birth of Roger and Michael.
She was a dynamic Air Force spouse and PTA member, school project leader, and much loved home maker. After retirement from the Air Force they resettled to what became a lasting family home in the Roughedge community outside Monroe. While living at Roughedge she was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church and also accepted an invitation to work nearby in Parkwood HS's cafeteria as a desert cook and school cashier. She enjoyed many years at Parkwood HS spending time with her coworkers, teachers, and students. Soon after the spring 1989 school year ended, RP and Sarah retired to Heron Cay in Vero Beach to enjoy beach time, bocce, and many adventures in Florida.
Sarah was a caring, capable and loving angel servant to God throughout her life. She was the family matriarch and hosted family holidays and a weekly Sunday meal for all friends and family. She was an avid reader her whole life and loved everything in nature but especially tending to her orchids and birds. She also enjoyed making paintings of birds and flowers, painting ceramic figures, and especially a new Christmas Santa figure every year. She was a lifelong fan and supporter of professional and college football ever since watching her brother Bill Walton play before and after the war and also attending an eventful late 1940s era UNC vs Duke game staring Choo Choo Justice.
Sarah will be missed by family and friends in Heron Cay and North Carolina. She was a true angel on earth and a wonderful mom and grandma. Her family would especially like to thank our special cousin Tilly and all Mom's remarkable Heron Cay friends for their visits, friendship, and love throughout the last 17 years she lived alone. A memorial service for Sarah will be held at Heron Cay club house, Vero Beach Florida at 11:30 AM, Saturday December 2, 2023 followed by a reception at her home; 188 Galloway Cay.
