Obituary

Dr. Stephen L. Derkash, 101, died at home in Vero Beach on Dec. 13, 2011.

Born in Nanticoke, PA on Oct. 10, 1910, he served as a family doctor in Greenwich, CT for 35 years before retiring to Vero Beach in 1982. While in Greenwich he served as president of the Greenwich Medical Society.

A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, he earned a PhD from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and his MD from the Hahnemann Medical College.

Dr. Derkash was a war hero, landing in the first hour on Utah Beach during the WWII invasion of Normandy. For heroic action as a Navy Medic he was awarded the Bronze Star.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Helen Derkash, by sons Bruce Derkash of Tucson, AZ and Dr. Robert Derkash of Glenwood Springs, CO, by daughters Judith Hollander of Bethel, AK and Nancy Hanson of Darien, CT, and by 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30AM Dec. 19th at Holy Cross Church in Vero Beach. Arrangements are by Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home in Vero Beach.
